    Why Choose the Essentials Kit?

Our sourdough Essentials kit is the perfect way to start baking sourdough, without hunting for gear. Each kit includes a high-quality German Weck jar and a jar spurtle: the same tools we bake with in our own kitchen. All you need is a scale, water, and flour.

We pack every kit like a present. Your Superstarter Essentials kit arrives in a rigid tuck box with colorful crinkle paper. It’s fun to open, or send it directly to a gift recipient with no wrapping required.

    How do I use it?

Activating your new sourdough starter is simple. Just follow the included instruction card, or visit our rehydrating page for more detail.

Just mix your packet of Superstarter powder with flour and water daily, and in 3-4 days you will be ready to bake!

    How Superstarter Works

Each small batch of Superstarter begins with our master culture, which traces its heritage back over 175 years. A small portion is strengthened over our proprietary five-day protocol, then gently dehydrated at low temperatures to preserve peak microbial strength. Combined with our detailed, beginner-friendly instructions, this means your sourdough starter will wake up faster, stronger, and you'll be baking fresh bread in as little as three days.

What is a Dehydrated Sourdough Starter?

A sourdough starter is a living microbial community, primarily populated by wild yeasts and lactic acid bacteria. Through the process of fermentation, this culture breaks down flour's sugars, creating a leavening effect for your bread without the need for commercial yeast. By carefully dehydrating this culture, we preserve these microorganisms in a dormant state. This dehydrated sourdough starter powder is shelf stable until you are ready to activate your starter.

    What makes our starter different

Our mother culture is carefully maintained using optimal feeding ratios, a proprietary blend of flours, and temperature controlled. When each small batch of Superstarter is ready to harvest, we gently dehydrate it using food-grade equipment, carefully monitoring both temperature and humidity. This scientific approach ensures maximum viability and faster growth.Through controlled testing and analysis, we have selected for fast-growing yeast cultures, maximized microbe and LAB density, while reducing acidity. This results in a sourdough starter that rehydrates quickly at full strength. It’s not just dry discard: it’s alive and optimized to bake, so you can go from powder to bread in as little as three days.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The Essentials Kit includes everything in the Superstarter kit, plus a Weck 743 glass jar with lid and a silicone spurtle jar spatula.

Why a Weck jar for starter?
Straight sides and transparent glass make it easy to monitor bubbles and rise. It’s durable and ideal for sourdough starter. It’s easy to pour and easy to clean.

    Is this beginner-friendly?
Very. The printed cards and troubleshooting guide walk you through every step. Email support is included.

    How long does activation take?
As little as 3 days to full baking strength using our protocol.

How long will the dried starter last?
2+ years in a cool, dry place (unopened).

How much bread can I make?
Once active, you can use it indefinitely as you feed and maintain it.

    Is your packaging sustainable?
As a small beach-based brand, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact. Our packaging, including the box, honeycomb wrap, and filler paper, is curb recyclable. Our tissue and mailers are manufactured using post-consumer materials.

Due to the need for moisture and UV protection, our foil pouches are not recyclable at this time.

    About us

    We're bakers first.

Yeast Coast Sourdough was born from a desire to share our starter with those we love. Things grew from there, and we've found ourselves shipping our dehydrated sourdough starter kits nationwide.

Each and every kit is still handcrafted in small batches, by us, from our 175 year old heritage mother culture. Because we're bakers ourselves, we know exactly what to look for to ensure our kits are operating at their best.
